Contemporary educational approaches, especially those informed by the learning sciences, almost all pursue twin goals of uncertain compatibility. One goal is to insure students’ grasp of important ideas. The other is to help them develop as autonomous learners and thinkers. Some approaches may be biased toward the first goal, others toward the second, but generally there is a tension, which may be alleviated by compromise, wishful thinking, or other more adventurous approaches.
